I was trying to learn some new words from BBC Arabic. It was during the beginnings of the Egyptian demonstrations, no later than the attacks of January 28, I believe, that the BBC, while I was using the site Word Champ, showed me headlines about a man well known in the Egyptian government's opposition. Word Champ couldn't give me a translation. Neither could any on-line dictionary. Nor my hard-copy dictionary.
So I started looking for the letters in my course book again, I've been having a hard time remembering abjad, and without writing the letters down, I noticed it was starting to look familiar. I had to look through lesson two of the course book, but once I remembered long vowels, I realised why no one could give me a translation: it's a name!البرادعي ElBaradei is one of the many people who helped to rally Egyptians into demonstrating on January 25, following Tunisia's success with their demonstrations against their government.
When I expressed this triumph on facebook, my friend Abi called me the language goddess. Although far from true, it has helped me to continue my studies with even more vigour and gusto than before. And I thank her most dearly for that and the name and url.
